We are Katy Perry

Conclusion - Katy Perry is talented.

The fact is she is a mainstream hit machine, with lyrics and music mostly decided for her. If indeed she did make the decisions herself, well, that's even worse.  But watching this video and listening to that MGMT cover, digging the jazz tempo, listening to her deep, soulful voice, and being frustrated by the absolute nonsense coming out of her mouth most of the time - i realized something.  We are all Katy Perry.

She has this great musical talent, but instead of producing great, meaningful, soulful music, she creates inane garbage.    How must God feel?  He's given us all this talent, all these passions and daily we waste it on shortsighted concerns.  We doubt ourselves, follow others advice rather than believing in what he's inherently made us.

So, from this day forward, when I confronted with Katy Perry's hyper sexualized nonsense, I'll be reminded of just how much God has given us.

  1. I read the title, and immediately thought, yes! another one of Pavan's pop culture observations..

Can't say I'm particularly familiar with Katy Perry, but your comments ring true about much of pop culture. In so many ways, pop culture has taken talents that were meant for art and used them for money.

  3. Sorry I'm late entering the discussion. I just found your blog today and think this is a seriously interesting topic. I must say I never, ever want to be a half-way Christian like that. Not that I think I'm better than Katy Perry; it sounds haughty, but I simply want to avoid the sell-out nonsense that she has willingly jumped into. When her gospel CD tanked, she decided to go mainstream & become a sex symbol. Because sex sells. Yes, Katy, it does. But abandoning your faith in pursuit of worldly success will only make you feel good for so long, I can promise that. Don't forget that things of this world fade, and crack, and disintegrate over time. God is forever. He will still be reaching for you when you suck in your final breath on this planet. I'm a struggling artist myself, a novelist with no published books to speak of. If Simon & Schuster offered me a contract right now, provided that I wrote a trashy novel, I wouldn't do it. I believe art ought to serve as insipration and, ultimately, point to Christ. End of story.
